Digital transformation of an inclusive festival

Client: Scambi Festival

Scambi Festival is a 3 day festival based in Italy that promotes diversity and inclusion their workshops and events.

The Scambi Festival wants to redesign their entire front-end user experience to improve the user engagement and usability/navigation of their website so that there are increased conversions towards the core features of their website (volunteer sign-up, ticket booking, donate, read blog, contact). Currently their website has some information not clearly presented and organized and need help to create a more professional but fun (non-corporate) style throughout their webpages. To assist with this, our team helped with ideating on stylistic changes to components for the site and reformat page layouts to convey clear and actionable information for site viewers.

Redesign Scambi’s front-end user experience for all core pages, focusing on enhancing the look and feel while navigating through the website and adding more interactive capabilities.

Understanding the inspiration

Scambi provided us with other sites that they were inspired by. This gave us insight into possible directions to take with the redesign.

Mapping out user interactions and journeys

The purpose of this survey was to understand a users’ experience upon first visiting Scambi’s current website (https://scambi.org/). The results will inform users’ pain points, areas of delight, and areas of improvement.

Some key takeaways were:

  • 50% participants mentioned the lack of CTAs and feeling like they don’t know what action to take

  • 50% participants expressed concerns with visual aspects that make it difficult to focus and follow the content (typography, color), lack of contrast, and lots of scrolling

Mapping out user interactions and journeys

This map gave us insight into what interactions would be necessary for the site and also informed us on the pages that would could be necessary for this front end re-design.

Wireframes

Each designer was given specific aspects of the site to design for. The pages I designed were the Pinolis (mini events) and the Film Festival page. Below are various possible designs for the Pinoli events. Originally we toyed with the idea of having a Google maps-esque interface for the events but this was too large of a task for the developers so we settled on a static map for the page.

Testing a hi-fidelity prototype

In total we had 5 participants for our user testing. We used an affinity map. Some key takeaways were:

  • Scambi describes itself as a Paneuretic festival ( a term they created). Users felt like the didn’t fully grasp its definition and how it relates to the festival.

  • Found the booking experience to be easier with the redesign

In the end…

The challenge

This was my first project working within a a product team that included other designer and engineers. It was challenging but exciting since we were all new to the experience and were thrilled by the idea of collaborating on a design.

Potential next steps

While we did conduct testing and narrowed down potential avenues for future iterations, those have been backlogged as our designs are in the process of being developed and there are other aspects of the site redesign that still need to be addressed.
